Human Welfare Association

Background

The organization was the result of a movement which was organized by the local farmers and participated by Dr. Rajani Kant, Director, HWA, to stop the Sewage Treatment Plant being installed at Dinapur village on most productive land of the area. Being a research associate of B.H.U. as a Soil Scientist he was quick to stop the hazards. HWA was then registered in 1991 to address the need of the vulnerable Dalits and minority community at Varanasi rural area with focus on women and children.

Projects

Basic Education Program

To intervene on the emerging challenges in the context of child labors at Varanasi, PES (Promoting Elementary Schooling) project started during July 2005 in this important city of east U.P with the support of Dascher and Terre des Homes, Germany. Now the program is converted into “EDUCATION TO SUSTAINABILITY”. Nearly 12000 children from marginalized community has mainstreamed in the education by the initiatives taken by the HWA within the 10 years of the effort.

Child Labor Eradication Program

Uttar Pradesh is first position in the Child Labour and the related issues are not co-relating in good condition because still the state has not implemented Right to Education Act (RTE), due to this a huge number of children are out of schools and recognised as Child Labours. The organisation is facilitating various community based education initiatives for the eradication of child labour in this region and associated with Campaign Against Child Labour (CACL) since last 15 years. This is worth mentioning here that the more than 4 Lakh people were directly or indirectly engaged in handloom sari sector and more than 60% handlooms have been closed down due to the effect of Chinese duplicate Silk, duplicate production by mills and powerlooms with the cheap yarn and they are selling the finished products in the name of Handloom and Handwoven and made by Silk. The weavers started migrating to other cities such as Surat, Banglore, Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi in search of livelihood, leaving behind their families in the villages. Due to this thousands of the children are again forced to work for their livelihood in this region.

Child Trafficking

Tourism and cottage industry is the greatest source of earning but at the same time it is a curse in the name of Homosexuality, child prostitution around slums & working places. Varanasi is well connected with the borders of Nepal, M.P. Bihar, Chhattisgarh & Jharkhand and centrally located among the 25 districts of eastern U.P.

Livelihood Promotion

HWA believes that without economic empowerment the social and political empowerment will not come and for the economic development, we are promoting various livelihood opportunities through the agriculture, flower, vegetable, fruit cultivation, dairy, gottary, small shops, handicraft and handloom items with the support of Self Help Groups with special emphasis to the involvement of the women groups. Nearly 3500 families are associated with the HWA in various livelihood promotion activities and all are without subsidy based.

Weavers Development

Intensive intervening for empowering marginalized weavers through “Tana-Bana” Program for the last 11 years. At this moment the organization has facilitated to establish a community based organization of handloom weavers as Banaras Bunker Semite (BBS). BBS is a registered proprietor of G.I. Registered Banaras Brocades and Sarees since September, 2009. The federation has their own Rural Mart in Varanasi city for the Artisans and Weavers.

Artisans Promotion

Varanasi is most prominent place for the handicraft and handwoven products in the country. Nearly 16 types of handicrafts are available in this region. The organisation is promoting and providing opportunities to the handicraft artisans through the training, design, market linkage, activities. The organisation has developed the product catalogue, brochures for the Metal Craft which is one of the prominent handicrafts of Varanasi since thousand years ago and still the generation are working in the same traditional manner. A grass root level federation of metal craft artisans has developed in the name of “The Benares Metal Craft Development Society”. And now this federation is working for the craftsmen’s. The organisation is providing promotion and marketing linkages through the e-MSME, e-NGOs and e-Panchayat and linked various NGOs, MSMEs and Panchayat through the various websites with the support of various developmental agencies.

Intellectual Property Rights

The HWA is a registered proprietor of G.I. Registered Banaras Brocades and Sarees since September,2009 and also provide the support for the GI registration of Handmade Carpet of Bhadohi and Champa Silk & Fabrics of Chhatisgarh. Both the products are also recognised as GI Registered product of the country. The HWA is now working on the post GI initiatives.

Involved the women groups for education up to 5th standard, livelihood, opportunities through sustainable agriculture practices with organic farming and empower them to the panchayat related rights.

Rural Development

Community Information Centers is base of Rural development program facilitated by Human Welfare Association, Varanasi. This is regularly observed that the poor and marginalized rural communities are day by day getting deprived from the benefits of government development programs.

Vocational Training

Vocational Training centre (VTC) is providing opportunity to the rural students especially girls could be trained for the self employment and self oriented income generation works such as Electronics & Electrical Trades, Computer, Hand Embroidery, Cutting-Tailoring and Stitching, Toys Making, Paintings, and other related need and demand based craft work.
